Tuscaloosa is the home of the University of Alabama. The city was founded in 1819 along the Black Warrior River and named for the Chocktow Indian chief, Tuscaloosa, which means Black Warrior. The University of Alabama was founded in 1831 and has been in integral part of the city's growth and economy every since.
