African-American Heritage Tour
Yazoo City is rich in African-American history. Bethel AME Church was formed in 1868. The church edifice was erected in 1890. Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church organized in 1870 is the first African-American Baptist congregation in Yazoo City. The edifice features stained glass windows, a balcony, Gothic lettering and a stairway. Oaker African-American Cultural Center is located in the former residence of A. J. Oaker, a major player in educating Yazoo City African-Americans. The center recognizes Yazoo County African-American heritage.
